KUNSTHAL AARHUS sætter gang tankerne i gang og sanserne i spil med Song Dongs værk,” Eating the the city.” Bon Appetit!

31.08.2017 La Tomatina

ENG/DK La Tomatina is the worlds largest annual food fight festival and takes place in Bunol, Spain, the last Wednesday of August The tomato fight has been a strong tradition in Bunol since 1944 or 1945. No one is completely certain how this event originated, but one popular theory is that disgruntled townspeople attacked city councilmen with tomatoes during a town celebration. The holiday was banned during the Spanish State period under Francisco Franco but returned in the 1970s after his demise. The participants comes from all over the world, with Australians (12 percent), Britons (11.79 percent), Japanese (10.17 percent) and Americans (7.64 percent), leading the way, along with, the locals and others from Spain. La Tomatina was for free until 2013 where fee was introduced to limit the numbers of participants. Due to the acidity of the tomatoes which disinfects and cleans, the streets are extra clean when the red tomato paste is washed away.
THE RULES OF LA TOMATINA ARE;
Do not bring bottles or hard objects as they can cause accidents and hurt other participants
Do not rip other people’s T-shirts
You must squash the tomatoes before throwing them as this reduces the impact
Ensure you keep a safe distance from the lorries
As soon as you hear the second shot, you must stop throwing tomatoes

USEFUL ADVICE AT THE TOMATINA
Wear closed shoes that you do not mind throwing away afterwards. If you wear flip-flops, you may get hurt, or you could lose them easily during the battle
Wear old clothes, or clothes that you are not planning to wear again. They will most likely end up damaged from being ripped or incredibly dirty
You may find goggles useful. However, it is safer if you just ensure that you always have something clean to wipe your eyes with.
If you are planning to take pictures, bring a waterproof camera!

Do not miss the Palojabon – a greased pole with a Spanish ham at the top. Whoever can climb the pole and get the ham can keep it!
Stay safe and enjoy the festivities as much possible!

La Tomatina has inspired to similar celebrations around the world . In Colombia, the town of Sutamarchán has held a tomato fight since 2004 in June and there are annual La Tomatina-inspired events in Costa Rica and Chile. In the United States, Twin Lakes, Colorado, started the “Colorado-Texas Tomato War” in 1982, which pits residents from Texas and Colorado against each other in a food fight each September.if you wonder how the neighborhood in Bunol is effected then watch here🙂
